The enthusiastic instructors at ASUS Camps are back with the exciting and hands-on workshops for the 2014 spring season! It would be our pleasure to come into your classrooms and present any of the following workshops:
May 12th- June 13th
All workshops are 1 hour in length
Matter is everywhere and everything! Solid, liquid, gas, they’re all incredible in their own ways. Students will interactively learn the properties of all three states of matter as well as their transition phases. With activities ranging from experimenting with non-Newtonian fluid and mini “rockets” to making goo, students will realize how mind-blowing matter can be!
Although movement comes in all forms, one of the most interesting forms is hovering. Learn how this festinating feat is accomplished by hovercrafts of all shapes and sizes and over all sorts of surfaces. Students will learn about Newton’s Laws, overcoming friction, and all things hover related. We’ll experiment with design, creating our own mini hovercrafts, and get the chance to ride on an ASUS Camps custom hovercraft!
There are structures of every kind around us. They each have their own function and because of their different functions, they have different forms. Students will learn about tension, compression, balance, trusses and other strong shapes that help us make the magnificent structures we see in our man made world. Students will put their knowledge and design capabilities to the test as they try to build some staggering structures of their own.
From the deep blue oceans to our own backyards, ecosystems are thriving and full of life. The interaction between producer, consumer and decomposer is a delicate balance that humans can play a major role in. Students will get the opportunity to explore local miniature ecosystems, make their own food chains, and create a SCAT-errific part of the decomposition process!
It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s…something overcoming the forces of gravity to sustain flight! Flight is fascinating, and in this workshop, students will learn about all the principles and forces that act on things like birds, planes, and their favourite superhero as they fly through the air! Putting some of these principles to the test, students will experiment with paper airplane design and even make their own custom kites!
Through use of imagination and creativity, this workshop allows students to create works of art using unconventional supplies and materials that do not usually appear in an everyday art class. Students will be instructed to create different ‘masterpieces’. After, kids will be asked to develop and use their improvisation and communication skills to share a story about their art with their peers. This challenge can help students learn to see that art can be discovered out of anything at all.
Students will get the chance to learn about the basics of stage productions, dramatic performance, and script adaptation. This means we will be playing many drama games! Students will be introduced to set design, costuming, mime, tableaux exercises and improvisation. Students will further develop their communication skills, and gratuity for theatrical arts. This is a perfect opportunity to learn about the various components of Drama, and to let your creativity go wild!
Once upon a time, there was a fabulous workshop called Happily Ever After! This workshop provided students with an introduction to the fundamental components of story writing. This workshop encourages creativity, imagination, and provides the chance for students to enhance their writing abilities. By looking at pre-existing stories, students will be encouraged to use critical awareness in order to identify literary techniques, and use these practices in their own story building. All in all, this is a great chance for fantasy and fun to come together!
Printing with Pizazz offers a great introduction to the art of printmaking. This workshop will allow students to learn about the visual elements of print media, looking at how printmaking is used in newspapers, magazines, and comic books. We will be investigating the techniques of print advertising, and learning about the basic elements of color theory. Students will have the chance to make print art of their own, helping to further their understanding of how print culture works in our everyday lives!
This energetic activity teaches students about rhythm and teamwork. Students will learn about percussion instruments and create their own instuments to use in a final performance. They will find out how combining sounds and rhythms together can make wonderful music and art! Fun and informative for everyone!
